This is part two of my ongoing mission to track my Playstation plus transactions and to see whether or not Playstation plus is a good deal.
I have bought the year subscription for £39.99 English pounds and just like This Article from the guys at IGN.com im tracking my savings.
I’m following the same rules that have been set out by IGN which are as follows
For the next year, IGN PlayStation Executive Editor Greg Miller and IGN Guides Guru Colin Moriarty will track their PlayStation Plus PlayStation Network purchases every Wednesday. If they buy a full price game, it won’t be logged here. On the chalkboard below, we’ll track what the “free” content would have cost them as well as the discounts they’re receiving. Now, these figures will only include new stuff that the boys have downloaded. If they already own a piece of content, it won’t be included just because it has been discounted or marked as free. This is strictly what they’ve downloaded under the PlayStation Plus umbrella to date.
I will trace how much i actually save assuming that i actually save anything. I will try to do this as quickly as i can after the uk store has been updated and intend to do it quicker than i did this time around this has been delayed due to a dead ps3 you can read about my thoughts on my new slim Here.
So this is how it stacks so far at the current time [31/07/10]
All price are from the UK store and in Pounds and pence (£)
Age of zombie
Steel & titanium pack
Sackboy on the run theme
Alien Zombie Death
Origami Swan Avatar
Origami Butterfly Avatar
It was a bit of a quiet update for me i already owned a lot of the stuff that was available still got a couple of good games to play for 5 mins also had an hour full game trial of mushroom wars. That games a lot of fun might well purchase it at some point in the future. Also a couple of demos were made available early to us plus subscribers so although store content for me was poor there has been one or two nice surprises.
I expect that the new Playstation plus content will be on tomorrows [Wednesday 1st September] And with me having the weekend off of work the next update should be up by the end of the week.
Information has been released that makes me even more excited about this game. And i quote
Gran Turismo 5 will feature weather effects, stunt arenas, kart racing and – most excitingly – a track editor according to comments by Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Worldwide Studios.
“Not only will Gran Turismo 5 deliver an even more comprehensive set of cars and courses than gamers saw with previous iterations, it will also feature new game-enhancing graphical effects such as damage, night racing and weather,” Yoshida told the official PlayStation site.
“These innovations are twinned with the option to join millions of like-minded individuals globally within the Gran Turismo community and to find a driving experience to suit,” he continued, “Whether that is taking on the Top Gear test track, chucking cars around stunt arenas, go-karting, creating and sharing your own track or intense head-to-head races. Who, where and what to drive is completely down to the individual.”…………
Some off you I’m sure will be aware that on Thursday sony release a new piece of software for the sony playstation 3 on the playstation store.
Vidzone is a free download of 23 mb in size and allows you to access more that 20’000 music videos from many of the big labels.
I downloaded and installed it on Thursday and I have been using it since. It is great, the videos although no HD yet they are good quality beating you-tube and other online sites I have seen. the adverts which support the service are noticeable but don’t really get in the way. You are able to create playlists and there are all sorts of premade playlists currently things like songs from the 80’s metallic, summer songs, and some exclusive kasabean stuff as well as a recently added tribute to Michael Jackson.
If you own a playstation its well worth installing especially if you also have a psp as well because you can use remote play and access it anywhere there is a wireless internet connection.
There are some downsides videos arnt HD the user interface is a little unresponsive sometimes and doing certain things pauses the video playback while it thinks. Perhaps the biggest issue at the moment is that its only available in 7 countries in the Pal region and not at all in the Americas or Asia.
The creators of the software have said that they are planning to expand this as quickly as possible but advertising issues is slowing it down. Many of the problems that have been mentioned specifically HD video are being looked into and we im sure can be expecting not only regular music updates but also software and feature improvements.
I expect vidzone to be a big hit assuming that they do continue to develop and don’t allow themselves to drop the ball the sooner that they can get to other countries the better.
I think its a pretty exciting feature and cant wait to see what they do with it.
Well it looks like the war of the formats has finally finished as of today. The bbc is reporting that toshiba one of major backers is dropping out. [BBC Article]
Toshiba have stated that they will stop production of HDDVD players and recorders so that they can concentrate there efforts in other areas. However they will still supply retailers with players and recorders till the end of march this year and will continue to give technical support to the millions of people that have gone with HDDVD. The death of HDDVD has been on the cards for sometime now with many of the larger movie studios supporting blueray and an ever decreasing presence at retail with major chains like Walmart either removing there HDDVD stock completely or Focusing more on the Bluray format.
Sony’s decision too include a bluray player in there gaming console the playstation 3 also gave blueray a huge advantage what ever the HDDVD camp also supported by Microsoft would like people to have believed.
I for one am glad that this war is over and not just because I am a playstation owner (although it helps :P) It makes things a lot easier for consumers and retailers, Don’t get me wrong in some respects the format war was a good thing. Competition is good as it means cheaper prices and more choice for the consumer and you can be certain that if there was only one of the formats Prices would not have reached the level they are now for a long time.
What i hope now is that the remainder of the film studios still supporting HDDVD will make a swift move to blueray And that prices for bluray players and films will continue to fall and not stagnate.
Oh and some buying advice for those that after seeing this news and wanting to buy a Bluray player. I really would suggest that you buy the playstation 3. Even if your not interested in the games or anything else It is by far one of the best bluray players on the market and is certainly the cheapest on the market.
Towards the end of november i bit the bullet and shelled out for a Playstation 3 and to put it simply its awsome.
But that’s not really what i want to talk about as such. Today I learnt that Gran Turismo [which if you don’t know, is supposedly the worlds most popular racing game series and is exclusive to the Sony Playstation ] And BBC Worldwide have teamed up and will be releasing 40 episodes of top gear on Grand Turismo TV [GT TV] which is a new feature to be introduced on the playstation network and which will also be able to be used to keep up to date with motoring news which frankly is awesome.
But not only that the test track which is used for the series and is raced on ever week by Clarkson, Hammond and May not to mention dozens of celebrity’s in a reasonably priced car [ not at the same time. Althought….] Will be available to race in Gran Turismo 5.
Now i was already planning on getting GT5 as they are always great but all this has made me very excited for the next version in the series where as before i was only excited.
This sort of thing could really hope shift consoles and i hope other game developers and even sony take notice it will be very interesting to see the numbers when this game is finally released some time in 2008.
