Windows 10s Opinion/Review

So, I should probably start this of explaining that I have only been able to use windows 10s for a brief period but I am of course familiar with windows 10 and am a Windows Insider.

Windows 10s is great possibly the best version of a windows operating system yet.

Now if you don’t know Windows 10s it’s revised version of windows 10 based on Windows 10 Pro. You are currently unable to buy it in the shops or online but It does comes preinstalled on certain systems such as the new Microsoft Surface Laptop and its designed to be quick, secure and responsive.

Now as I mentioned I have been able to use it briefly on Microsoft’s new surface laptop which has a premium feeling and looking piece of Hardware (which at just under a grand it frankly should be), Windows 10s is super-fast with super quick boot and resume times and its everything you really want from a OS (i.e. it doesn’t seem to get in the way and feels very smooth).

You can tell that this has had a lot of thought and is aimed at those that may be interested in chrome books and maybe even taking on apple as they have in other areas. This version of windows 10 because of the policies that it uses is very secure very easy to use and difficult to break you also get great battery life without necessarily needing as many heavy batteries which of course leads to lighter hardware. This security and optimisation is impressive however the way this is done is also my biggest bug bear with windows 10s. And I think it will be the hang-up for a lot of people too.

The main way that this security and ease of use has been implemented as well as excellent use of resources is that its locked down to the Windows App Store. Which while having improved a lot over the last couple of years is unfortunately still dire. You are unable to install 3rd party and even some 1st party applications as if they are not on the windows store you simply aren’t able to use them. So that means no Photoshop or GIMP for photo editing, No Steam or any of the other gaming clients, no video editor and probably the biggest thing for a lot of people no option to be able to use a different web browser other than Edge.

Now personally I like Edge for the most part but I use Vivaldi (based on chrome) and Waterfox (Firefox based) as my main browsers as edge still has issues with some sites including some of Microsoft and doesn’t have the widest range of extensions that others do. As an aside I also do wonder what the EU will make of them forcing you to use Edge considering the history MS have had with them. Clicky.

Up until very recently it wasn’t even possible to install MS Office although that has since been added and I’m sure as time goes on it will get better and one thing that I haven’t mentioned is that some of the things that are currently missing in the app store can be done though a web browser as long of course as it works with edge.

I can’t help but feel that Windows 10s is suffering a little from the “chicken or egg” Perhaps the fact it exists will increase Devs willingness to port and create apps for the app store thus getting rid of a major barrier of 10s but on the other hand perhaps it’s a little too early for 10s. If the store improves as I hope that it will, I’m sure more would be willing to use it and even in its current state. I also assume plans are in place to implement 10s in lower spec, Cheaper hardware because it has a place for those that want something more than a tablet but don’t want the complexity of potential risk of a PC/Laptop.

In conclusion Windows 10s is great but let down hard by a weak app store offering but has serious potential for the future if it gets a chance.

The good news though is that with the surface Laptop an upgrade to windows 10 Pro is possible and until the end of the year its free to do so. I know for one that if I was to get my hands of a surface laptop I would be very happy to have it but I would have to switch to windows 10 pro immediately which thankfully is as easy searching windows in the store and selecting the free upgrade option. It’s Just a shame to can’t go back to 10s once you have upgraded.

*After Publishing I noticed that Photoshop Elements is available on the app store sorry about that. But app selection in general is still poor especially when you consider other app stores and that its all that is available to use.

Update,News, Youtube and Minecraft

Its been a while since I last posted. It has been a busy few weeks the kids have gone back to school and I have had some drama with the car which fortunately is now working ok and has the MOT for the year. I still have manged for the most part to get videos up on my youtube channel and am keeping to my schedule of uploading something every Tuesday and Thursday. Despite an internet outage to two which meant that I was a little late on one or two of them.

I have also manged to do a few streams on twitch.tv  I stream when i can and when internet allows my latest uploads to YouTube are from a live steam that i did while playing lord of the rings online [lotro]  Part 1 Part 2 . There are more video’s on my channel and I would very much appreciate it if you would like and subscribe.

A few large pieces of news have happened since I last posted, Microsoft buying Minecraft is one. Personally on this I think that even and 2.5billion buying Mojang is a good deal for them however I do worry what it will mean for Minecraft especially on the Playstation format. I hope that Microsoft treat the community right and realise that having it on every platform known to man is a good thing.

As I type in the UK, Scotland are voting either yes or no to decide whether they want to stay part of the UK or if they want to go it alone. So far most of the polls have been very very close. I personally hope that Scotland stay as I do think that we are stronger together than we are apart. I am however getting fed up about all the coverage that there has been about it. As I live in England and am English I don’t get to have a say on the matter but its been all that has been talked about for the last few months. We should know by tomorrow morning either way.

I think that is all for now.

I would just like to thank my followers and subscribers and hope that you continue to enjoy my content.

The End of Games For Windows Live….. Or Prehaps Not

It had been widly reported that come the end of the 31st of june the much maligned and some would say hated games for windows live would become no more as microsoft were set to switch it off for good.

This would have left several games unplayable with out a patch not unlike the recent closure of gamespy.

However according to MCV this is not happening and microsoft themselfs saying that they are continuing to support the platform which is good for games that rely on it and didnt look like they would have had any chance of a patch.

It’s good news for the games that were in limbo and for the players that still play them.

The big question is what have Microsoft got planned for games for Windows live now? What do they have planned for the pc? Time will only tell.

LetsPlay Video’s

I have been doing Lets Play Videos for  a few years now even before they had become popular, I used to call them Play through videos and if you go back through my video uploads on my YouTube channel Link .

For some reason I have never really bothered putting them onto this blog, I’m not going to go back through the history of two hundred odd videos and posting them on here but I am going to start off with my last couple.

They are Age of the Empires 2: HD Edition Part One and Part Two which are parts of a longer stream I did on Twitch.tv Link

I hope you enjoy and as always feel free to leave constructive feedback either on the posts or on YouTube.

Microsoft Songsmith Commercial

Into the Vista

Recently I bought myself a new laptop.

Acer Aspire 5930G

2.0ghz processor

3 gigs ddr2 ram

250gb HDD

Nvidia 9600m GT 512 MB

Acer Aspire 5930g

Acer Aspire 5930G

Now this is the first time that I have really used vista properly, I did try out the release candidates just before the official release but they didn’t really work. My PC ran it fine I just could not have any sound due to an incompatibility with the on board sound card so I really didn’t use it much at all.

After the official release there were all these horror story about the installation and how it ran and basically bad storys about every aspect of the new vista operating system.

I knew already that vista had improved a lot since then due to my short stint in a TV and Audio department during the busy Christmas period last year, But it was still with great trepidation that I booted up my new laptop. I was as ready for the impending doom of installing an operating system as I have gone thought the not so pleasant reinstalling of XP far too many time’s in the past and that really is a pain [In fact I’m doing reinstalling XP on my old laptop as I type] .

Vista however in comparison however was a piece of cake and so quick, just a few clicks later and a little waiting and my new laptop was up and running and connected to the net ready for me to grab all the software that is now essential for a happy computing experience so first stop Microsoft updates. Thankfully the copy of vista that came with the laptop already had all the service pack one updates installed so I only had to grab the most recent updates. While that was going on I strolled over to http://www.getfirefox.com and got myself a proper web browser.

I have now had my new laptop for about two weeks and I really like it and you know what I actually really like vista too. It was easy to set up everything that I want to and do so far it has done so without complaint. I haven’t even had it crash or bluescreen on me once and hopeful by saying that I wont have cursed myself. Everything is running how I like it and running fast. The user interface perhaps one of the biggest differences at least on the face of things is great its smooth and it just seems to flow. It does take sometime to get used to and Im still finding my feet but all the things that you need most of the time are easy to find. And things that most people don’t need or want to know about are hidden away [that does cause me problems mind :P].

Anyway time to stop this seemingly endless waffle if you as I was concerned about windows vista don’t be certinly on a new machine it looks like most of the problems that haunted vista’s launch have been sorted and it is just so much nicer to install and look at than xp.  Roll on Windows 7
