Boom25 Shop till you Drop

You may have heard of sites in the UK like Quidco and Topcashback.

The idea with these sites is that you earn a certain percentage back on purchases if you go to a retailer via the service.
The site then earns commision and then pays you a percentage of your order often from as little as 1% to much higher depending on the particular deal.

A new player to the market is a little different.

With Boom25 you still go via the site to make purchases but rather than earning a percentage back you get the chance to “spin” to earn the whole amount back. If you don’t happen to win on a particular spin you instead earn a Bonus amount which can mount up and be withdrawn when you do finally win.

Just a small example of Retailers available

Some people have won the total of there holidays back where the norm is a more modest amount of return.

Either way, we have been using the site for a while now and despite not having any huge wins the small ones here and there have meant that we have earnt far more back in a shorter period of time than we ever did with the other sites.

Welcome to the Gutenberg Editor

Of Mountains & Printing Presses

The goal of this new editor is to make adding rich content to WordPress simple and enjoyable. This whole post is composed of pieces of content—somewhat similar to LEGO bricks—that you can move around and interact with. Move your cursor around and you’ll notice the different blocks light up with outlines and arrows. Press the arrows to reposition blocks quickly, without fearing about losing things in the process of copying and pasting.

What you are reading now is a text block the most basic block of all. The text block has its own controls to be moved freely around the post…

… like this one, which is right aligned.

Headings are separate blocks as well, which helps with the outline and organization of your content.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Handling images and media with the utmost care is a primary focus of the new editor. Hopefully, you’ll find aspects of adding captions or going full-width with your pictures much easier and robust than before.

Beautiful landscape
If your theme supports it, you’ll see the “wide” button on the image toolbar. Give it a try.

Try selecting and removing or editing the caption, now you don’t have to be careful about selecting the image or other text by mistake and ruining the presentation.

The Inserter Tool

Imagine everything that WordPress can do is available to you quickly and in the same place on the interface. No need to figure out HTML tags, classes, or remember complicated shortcode syntax. That’s the spirit behind the inserter—the (+) button you’ll see around the editor—which allows you to browse all available content blocks and add them into your post. Plugins and themes are able to register their own, opening up all sort of possibilities for rich editing and publishing.

Go give it a try, you may discover things WordPress can already add into your posts that you didn’t know about. Here’s a short list of what you can currently find there:

  • Text & Headings
  • Images & Videos
  • Galleries
  • Embeds, like YouTube, Tweets, or other WordPress posts.
  • Layout blocks, like Buttons, Hero Images, Separators, etc.
  • And Lists like this one of course 🙂

Visual Editing

A huge benefit of blocks is that you can edit them in place and manipulate your content directly. Instead of having fields for editing things like the source of a quote, or the text of a button, you can directly change the content. Try editing the following quote:

The editor will endeavor to create a new page and post building experience that makes writing rich posts effortless, and has “blocks” to make it easy what today might take shortcodes, custom HTML, or “mystery meat” embed discovery.

Matt Mullenweg, 2017

The information corresponding to the source of the quote is a separate text field, similar to captions under images, so the structure of the quote is protected even if you select, modify, or remove the source. It’s always easy to add it back.

Blocks can be anything you need. For instance, you may want to add a subdued quote as part of the composition of your text, or you may prefer to display a giant stylized one. All of these options are available in the inserter.

You can change the amount of columns in your galleries by dragging a slider in the block inspector in the sidebar.

Media Rich

If you combine the new wide and full-wide alignments with galleries, you can create a very media rich layout, very quickly:

Accessibility is important — don’t forget image alt attribute

Sure, the full-wide image can be pretty big. But sometimes the image is worth it.

The above is a gallery with just two images. It’s an easier way to create visually appealing layouts, without having to deal with floats. You can also easily convert the gallery back to individual images again, by using the block switcher.

Any block can opt into these alignments. The embed block has them also, and is responsive out of the box:

You can build any block you like, static or dynamic, decorative or plain. Here’s a pullquote block:

Update

Its been a while since I last posted here. No particular reason just a case of being busy with life and to some extent using other platforms.

Recently been working on my YouTube Channel and am very close to 200 subscribers which is an achievement I think.

Been doing a lot of F1 2016 videos and am really excited for the new season which is underway now and of course the first race of the season being on Sunday.

Not only have I been working on YouTube but also discovered Beam.pro Mixer which is a contender to Twitch.tv

Its smaller in terms of people that use it but the community seems much tighter and it has a lot of features which make it an interesting competitor.

I’m working on getting a headset or something so that in the future I can do some video’s that actually have good quality voice but we will see how that goes.

How to Remove Mouse Lag from Elan Touch Pad on a laptop

One of the most annoying things about gaming on a laptop is the touchpad. Now there is no reason why the touch pad should not be as serviceable as the good old mouse, It might take a little practise but it should work just as well as a standard mouse. However if you have ever tried to aim immediately after using the keyboard in most cases you’ll probably have noticed that you can’t for a few seconds or that there seems to be interference.

What you would have just experienced is Palm Protection (Different company’s call it different things but it all amounts to the same thing). What Palm Protection is designed to do is to protect users from accidently activating the touch pad while typing on the keyboard. The Idea being that if you’re typing an email or for instance a article you’re not having your cursor move around the screen and end up accidently typing away in a sentence you finished ages ago.

For gaming however this is a bit of a nightmare as it can mean that for a few moments you are unable to look or aim which in some games isn’t an issue but in fast paced games such as a fps could mean the difference to life or death.

Now you would think it would be pretty easy to disable this and indeed for some manufactures its just a option in the driver settings for the touchpad. However for others even switching it off in the settings doesn’t actually switch it off.

And that’s where this post comes into it.

PlayStation Plus September Opinon

The games for Septembers PlayStation Plus are
Journey

Lords of the Fallen

Journey

Is a great game and well worth a play however by now I would have though anyone that doesn’t have it just doesn’t want to play it. So as a PS+ game is a bit of a waste.

Lords of the Fallen

I don’t know anything about this game so in that way I’m interested in seeing the video’s I have just seen make it look a little like god of war so it may be interesting at the very least.

I’m still holding out that Sony have something planned for PlayStation plus in relation to their Conference on the 7th of September.

Time will tell but as of now not a great month for PS+

HRMC and Concentrix

Not that long ago we received a letter from Concentrix a company that we had never heard of before. Concentrix is an outsourced company that are working on behalf of HRMC. The overall aim is to investigate benefit claims and to try to cut how much is payed out in benefits by weeding out those that are either claiming fraudulently or incorrectly.

However the way they go about this isn’t very pleasant as the letters can be rather nasty and they work on a guilty until proven innocent basis which means dealing with them can be described as difficult. The letters ask for numerous bits of sensitive data depending on what they are accusing you off, and to top this off they give you a pretty short amount of time to get the documentation they demand sent to them. When you do this, due to the volume that they are receiving the chances of them even getting them on the system on time is remote let alone looked at. Calling them also often means holding for an hour only to be cut off automatically without ever speaking to a human.

This leads to perfectly innocent people being left without the money they are entitled to and a whole load of stress and aggro.

Fortunately and as we expected our claim was finally sorted and the result fell in our favor.

If you search online for concentrix you’ll find dozens of cases there are even newspaper articles about it

Independant

Mirror

There are plenty of places offering support and advice one such facebook group is called Concentrix Mums which has a lot of friendly and helpful people, Its also worth looking up mumsnet and netmums and of course your local Citizens Advice.

If you get one of these dreaded letters try not to panic and seek advice but most of all dont ignore it. Their is lots of help available and as long as you are claiming what you should things will get sorted.

I hope that this post helps and good luck.
