New batch of lets play video’s

I have been pretty busy on the video front. I have several new videos on my youtube Channel

Check it out Here.

Main recent videos of not as far as I’m concerned are

Let’s Play World of Guns Tutorial Parts 1 and 2

World of guns is a game where you have a 3d model of a gun in this instance an ak47 and you can disassemble and reassemble it. The game part is pitting you against your friends and the world and challenges you to disassemble and reassemble in the fastest time possible while remembering which part goes where.

The 3d models seem very accurate and things like xray mode and split mode which allow you to fire the gun and see how it works make this game really interesting if your even remotely interested in guns or how they work.

Let’s Play Don’t Starve Day 7-8

The next part in my Don’t Starve let’s play series. I’m really enjoying this still have no idea what im doing as you maybe able to tell but at least im not dead yet.

Let’s Play Simraceway. Race!

I love racing games but it can be very difficult to play and record them. This is one of the two video’s that I have done playing the game Simraceway a really good Free to Play racing game on PC. For anyone interested I was using a Playstation 3 controller with MotionJoy to control the car. I can tell you it was a pain in the butt to get working but it is an ok way to control them if you don’t have a wheel. Unfortunately I didn’t count on the lag both network and fps.

There are a few more videos as well that I have uploaded Including a nice trailer for Project Cars [That game is looking amazing] And I have a load more coming soon. Check them out on my channel Here and  if you like what you see please do Subscribe

Lets Play Car Mechanic Simulator 2014

This one is an unusual one.  I saw the game become available on steam the other day and wondered how on earth they could make a game about being a game mechanic.

Of course I really  shouldnt have been surprised considering how many of sim games are now available. I am one of those people that like sim games but have got used to them being pretty poor and pretty badly limited in what you are actually able to do.

I have to say that Car Mechanic Simulator 2014 actually seems pretty competent. As your’ll see in the video I played the first full mission but what you wont see is that I had got half way through the second mission before my computer crashed which isnt the games fault. From what i have played already the game is well made has great graphics and seems to cover alot of varing situations.  The game is stable and I had a good time with it. Check out my video and then find the game on steam.

I am hoping to upload further missions very soon. Also look out for further episodes of my Age of Empires videos.

SSD And My Experiance.

So I made the jump and forked out for a shiny new SSD hard drive as I was getting increasing frustrated with the amount of time that windows was taking to startup and I thought that the decrease in-game loading times would be nice.
So after doing some research on a couple of websites mainly SSDReview.com. I finally settled on the 120gb ocz Vertex 3 Which I purchased from Ebuyer.com now this ssd is sata 3 compatible and although I don’t at this time have a sata 3 port on my motherboard the price and performance the disk was showing was good and its also fully compatible with sata 2.

One of the Important things to rember about SSD’s contrary to more traditional hard drives is that the larger the storage capacity the faster they tend to be. There are cheaper options around with smaller capacity but the general consensus seems to be to go for no lower than 120GB.

Installation

Now this particular ssd is a 2.5″ drive but thankfully comes with an adaptor that allows it to fit into desktop cases. The drive just screws in to the adaptor with the screws that are provided and that adaptor is screwed into the case.

This is where I hit a slight snag.

The drive fitted into the adaptor absolutely fine as you would expect however, I have a Antec Nine Hundred Two and the screws to fit the adaptor to the case were too small for the thick walls of the drive bay. The adaptor has rather small bolt holes that have a fine thread and I was unable to find any that were over an inch long that were thin enough and had the correct thread.

I ended up screwing a couple of the screws from the inside out and for the ones that were too tight using some sandwich bag ties to make sure it was secure. Not ideal but it works and because the ties are plastic coated perfectly insulated.

That minor problem out-of-the-way the rest of the installation of the SSD went fine and it was onto installing windows and restoring backups.

Performance Tweaking AKA Getting The Best From The SSD

Thankfully installation of windows went pretty well as did the restoration of backups the next job on the list of things to do was to see what the windows experience score was the first run was  7.1 up from its previous 5.9 however the score was still limited by the hard drive score. So I googled to see if I could optimise the windows installation a bit more and prehaps clear some space off my already filling SSD.

I came across this Guide [Click Here]  From a forum post at this website surreystore.com

The first step was to turn on ahci mode on as i had installed windows already the first thing i had to do was to make some registry changes and then change the setting the bios Next parts were reasonably simple and consisted of;

Disabling System restore,

Disabling Drive Indexing,

Disabling Defragmentaion,

Turning off / moving  the page file to save space,

turning of hibernation again to save space,

Enabling faster booting and adjusting power settings.

Now I actually discovered that windows had actually done some of these steps itself which was nice, but I would suggest going through them anyway to check. I also skipped some of the steps listed on the website as I didn’t think that they met my requirements, for instance disabling recycle bin don’t be afraid to use your own judgements of your needs

I reran the windows experience test and received a new score of 7.3 the lowest score now being my graphics card the hard drive score had actually move to 7.4 so by just doing those steps id increased performance by .3 who knows what that actually means in real terms but an improvement is an improvement.

My final job was to move My Documents off of the SSD and onto the other Hard Drive another google search and a couple of rather complicated solutions later I actually found this [Click Here] posted by a guy called Headstrongfarm And discovered that its much easier than you would have thought. Windows does all the hard work for you all you have to do is tell it where you want to move the files too and it will move them to the folder you specify.

Conclusion

So overall the installation and setting up was pretty simple and problem free. Windows definitely starts faster and the computer is more responsive, Time will tell how worthwhile it was and we will see if the speed keeps up especially as the windows install gets older.

If your thinking about going the route of SSD I would definitely recommend it spend what you can afford but don’t go lower than a 120gb and as a friend of mine suggested don’t go by the specs the manufacture says go by what the benchmarks have to say a quick google search will bring up lots of review sites and most retail sites now also have a review system in place.

Good luck

Is PlayStation Plus A Good Deal? Part Two

This is part two of my ongoing mission to track my Playstation plus transactions and to see whether or not Playstation plus is a good deal.

I have bought the year subscription for £39.99 English pounds and just like This Article from the guys at IGN.com im tracking my savings.

I’m following the same rules that have been set out by IGN which are as follows

For the next year, IGN PlayStation Executive Editor Greg Miller and IGN Guides Guru Colin Moriarty will track their PlayStation Plus PlayStation Network purchases every Wednesday. If they buy a full price game, it won’t be logged here. On the chalkboard below, we’ll track what the “free” content would have cost them as well as the discounts they’re receiving. Now, these figures will only include new stuff that the boys have downloaded. If they already own a piece of content, it won’t be included just because it has been discounted or marked as free. This is strictly what they’ve downloaded under the PlayStation Plus umbrella to date.

I will trace how much i actually save assuming that i actually save anything. I will try to do this as quickly as i can after the uk store has been updated and intend to do it quicker than i did this time around this has been delayed due to a dead ps3 you can read about my thoughts on my new slim Here.

So this is how it stacks so far at the current time [31/07/10]

All price are from the UK store and in Pounds and pence (£)

Playstation plus -39.99
Wipeout HD +13.99
Destruction Derby +3.99
Field runners +3.99
Age of zombie +3.99
Steel & titanium pack +4.79
Sackboy on the run theme +1.59
Alien Zombie Death +2.49
Blast Off +2.49
Origami Swan Avatar +0.20
Origami Butterfly Avatar +0.20
Grand Total -2.27

It was a bit of a quiet update for me i already owned a lot of the stuff that was available still got a couple of good games to play for 5 mins also had an hour full game trial of mushroom wars. That games a lot of fun might well purchase it at some point in the future. Also a couple of demos were made available early to us plus subscribers so although store content for me was poor there has been one or two nice surprises.

I expect that the new Playstation plus content will be on tomorrows [Wednesday  1st September] And with me having the weekend off of work the next update should be up by the end of the week.

Playstation Plus Update and Playstation Slim

I have an update to my post https://yxxxx.wordpress.com/2010/06/30/is-Playstation-plus-a-good-deal-my-view/ in the works I had planned to have it done much quicker but sadly my playstation died  just after the last content push and i havent had the time to collate the data.

Now after buying a new slim im back in the saddle and ready to write-up what I have got out of it to date hopefully sometime before august ends.

Thought id share my thoughts on the Playstation slim first.

I bought the 250gb PS slim i have to say that I love the hard drive space my fat was one of the 60gig models and had gotten to the point where it just wasnt enough space anymore for all the content and games that’s available and i was finding i kept hitting the limit more and more often this is prehaps the only thing i do like about the new slim model.

The 60gig just looks and feels better. The system itself is still great no problems there and it is quieter  but the finish just isn’t the same. There are real buttons where as before they were touch which was really nice. The disc feed also seems more violent and is certainly noisier the matt finish just feels cheaper and of course you have half the usb ports down from 4 to 2 and no card reader. To be honest didn’t really use the card slot so im not so bothered by that but it was nice to have the option.

I’m still more than happy that i chose PlayStation over Xbox I cant wait for whats instore over the next couple of months Gamers have a real treat what ever platform your on its gonna be a good christmas.

Is PlayStation Plus A Good Deal? My View

As you may or may not know as of this week Playstation plus has been released on the Playstation network.

Playstation plus is a premium service that you can subscribe to similar to xbox live gold. If you want to find out more i recommend that you read the blog posts on the official Playstation blogs. which can be found

Europe http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2010/06/28/ps3-system-software-update-v3-40-and-playstation-plus-available-later-today/

US http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/06/24/playstation-plus-your-questions-answered/

Now there has been some questions as to weather its worth the cost or not. I personally think it is as do some of my friends however some people don’t see the value in it which is fair enough.

Now i came across a very interesting ongoing article on IGN which you can find linked to below

Is PlayStation Plus A Good Deal? – PS3 Feature at IGN.

It asks the question Is Playstation Plus a good deal? And goes on to say that two of the Playstation writers Greg Miller and Colin Moriarty will keep a list of what they spend/save using Playstation plus over the year seeing at the end how much each one saves or loses out having Payed for the year subscription.

Now i think this is an awesome idea and will really help people decide whether its for them or not so i thought that i would also try and do the same.

So following the rules they have set out.

For the next year, IGN PlayStation Executive Editor Greg Miller and IGN Guides Guru Colin Moriarty will track their PlayStation Plus PlayStation Network purchases every Wednesday. If they buy a full price game, it won’t be logged here. On the chalkboards below, we’ll track what the “free” content would have cost them as well as the discounts they’re receiving. This is strictly what they’ve downloaded under the PlayStation Plus umbrella to date.

I will trace how much i actually save assuming that i actually save anything.

So this is how it stacks so far after week one.

All price are from the UK store and in Pounds and pence (£)

Playstation plus -39.99
Wipeout HD +13.99
Destruction Derby +3.99
Field runners +3.99
Age of zombie +3.99

Grand Total -7.65

Playstation Vidzone

Some off you I’m sure will be aware that on Thursday sony release a new piece of software for the sony playstation 3 on the playstation store.

Vidzone is a free download of 23 mb in size and allows you to access more that 20’000 music videos from many of the big labels.

vidzone

I downloaded and installed it on Thursday and I have been using it since. It is great, the videos although no HD yet they are good quality beating you-tube and other online sites I have seen. the adverts which support the service are noticeable but don’t really get in the way. You are able to create playlists and there are all sorts of premade playlists currently things like songs from the 80’s  metallic, summer songs, and some exclusive kasabean stuff as well as a recently added tribute to Michael Jackson.

If you own a playstation its well worth installing especially if you also have a psp as well because you can use remote play and access it anywhere there is a wireless internet connection.

There are some downsides videos arnt HD the user interface is a little unresponsive sometimes and doing certain things pauses the video playback while it thinks. Perhaps the biggest issue at the moment is that its only available in 7 countries in the Pal region and not at all in the Americas or Asia.

The creators of the software have said that they are planning to expand this as quickly as possible but advertising issues is slowing it down. Many of the problems that have been mentioned specifically HD video are being looked into and we im sure can be expecting not only regular music updates but also software and feature improvements.

I expect vidzone to be a big hit assuming that they do continue to develop and don’t allow themselves to drop the ball the sooner that they can get to other countries the better.

I think its a pretty exciting feature and cant wait to see what they do with it.
